19th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Barren
The world feels different when you’re 5 000m / 16 400ft in the air. Breathing becomes laboured and your limbs grow heavier. The sun seems to be blistering, but thick jackets are required. It’s an unforgiving environment. In this case of the Peruvian Andes, though, the difficulty is a worthy sacrifice. You feel like you’re on top of the world, so high that your presence confuses the condors. The view stretches on forever and it is here that you feel the age & energy of this great planet.
