Basking on the Beach

As turtles are cold-blooded animals they bask in the sun in order to gain heat from the sun and from the substrate (the sand) with which they are in contact. Additionally, hanging out in the sun helps turtles produce vitamin D, an essential nutrient for healthy living for both turtles and humans.
