Battered on the Arduous Road West

Early pioneers going to the American West often traveled by covered wagon or other wheeled vehicles. There were no air-filled tires, and no shock absorbers. The wagons rattled over rocks and ditches on wooden wheels protected by metal. In the old town of Calico in California, there are weathered remnants of some of these wagons and their wheels, preserved by the dry desert air. This is one of them.
