22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Beach Sand Flows

Beautiful flows in nature. Sometimes grains of magnetite wash up on the beaches of Lake Michigan. These black grains were created as the glaciers pulverized rocks containing iron. They show the flow of water along the beach, with the added attraction of a small avalanche falling from the sand layered by wind and water.
