23rd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Wildlife
Bear Bubbles
I happened upon this scene as I started walking across a bridge, just as a brown bear passed beneath it, swimming quietly through the clear water below. From above, all I could see was the pattern of its fur and a delicate trail of bubbles marking its path — a rare vantage point that revealed the surprising grace of an animal built for power. In a landscape known for high-energy moments and dramatic salmon chases, this quiet scene stood apart. It reminded me that wildlife stories often unfold in silence, in the subtle rhythms between breaths and in the unguarded behaviors we glimpse only when we’re lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time.
