17th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
Beauty & Desperation

I chose The American Experience because of the story behind this photo. This is a Haitian Refuge wreck. While walking around this boat I couldn't help but wonder how bad must your life be to climb onboard a hand-built boat held together with old fishing rope a tarp for a sail and a belt to hold up the hand honed mast. Then shoving off for who knows where with a group of fellow Haitians no engine, compass, electronics being pushed by only the wind & current. I have never felt more Blessed more proud to be an American than that day. We later found out that after making landfall the Haitians were captured and returned to their country. Making me feel a mixture of many emotions. Oh my how other countries covet our countries freedoms let us not take them for granted. This was evident to me by these peoples actions to leave their country by any means they could.
