22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Besties

Vulpus Vulpus, Red Fox Kits These siblings were walking side by side. The male tawny kit threw his tail over the silver phase female kit. He then used his tail to pull her close to him. This is a behavior that I have not seen in the 12 years that I have been observing foxes in this area. The behavior seem intentional; a moment of affection between the fox kit siblings.
