This past summer I heard about the movement started in the late 1800's warning women that bicycle riding would lead to the dreaded "bicycle face" deformity. Credit was claimed by a male doctor in London and later discredited by a lady doctor 2 years later in Chicago. All in all it grew out of the fear that women who rode bicycles would gain too much independence and it would also lead to changes in clothing as the women wanted more comfortable clothes for this activity. Other women at the time (Susan B. Anthony, Ida Bell, Elizabeth Cade Stanton) wisely referred to the healthy aspects of the exercise. Well, it didn't work. Women rode bicycles, no one got "bicycle face", and the movement only lasted about 2 years. But, what angers the women I have talked to is that it was another attempt to control women. And to be honest I suspect this was not just advocated by men. Some women would have been outraged also. But, once again ... IT DIDN'T WORK
