The history of the Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary is a superb example of not only a sustainable travel project but also a conscientious decision to ensure the preservation of these precious animals. In 1994, the owner bought 400 plus acres of mangrove forest for commercial oil palm plantation. Upon learning about the plight of these monkeys, he allocated part of the land for this sanctuary. Today, visitors can enjoy this unique experience where an estimated 300 wild monkeys live in the approximately 1,600 acre reserve.
