14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Big Sur Sunset

This phenomenon occurs only for a few days each year during the winter solstice, when the sun set directly behind Keyhole Arch. All weather conditions have to be perfect, no clouds and tide must be high enough to reflect the sun's light perfectly. This sunset last only about 5 to 10 minutes or so at Los Padres National Forest in Big Sur.
