The birdman is a mythical, spiritual being linked to the chiefs of the Loma and Toma villages, near Macenta in Guinea. They communicate messages between chiefs, can move at superhuman speed and on this occasion were appearing and dancing to celebrate the new year and honour those who had died in the prior year.
