Birefringence in the Shape of a Mountain
On a winter walk around our neighborhood lake, I was amazed to see a rainbow of colors when looking down into in the thin lake ice. But the colors disappeared when I took off my sunglasses. Turns out my polarized sunglasses were allowing me to see an optical phenomenon called birefringence.
