15th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Bison roaming the Lamar Valley.
Bisons are herbivores who eat up to 60 pounds of grass per day. Unfortunately during the winter, grass is buried under many feet of snow. Bisons swing theirs head from side to side to shuffle the snow aside. Its hard work for not many calories.
