16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
While I was waiting for vultures to arrive I was entertained by hornbills which had gathered to eat the maggots hatching out on a zebra carcass. The female hornbill seals herself into the nest when the chicks hatch out, and the male feeds her through a small slit in the barricade.
