Black Bear Au Naturel
The ranger who greeted us at the Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary Wildlife and Eagle Center in Ketchikan, Alaska, told us that we would not see a black bear on our hike. They were still in hibernation, he said. Then about ten minutes into the hike, he received a message on his radio that there was a wildlife sighting ahead. We all rushed to a meadow, and there in the distance was a black bear, out of hibernation and healthy, helping himself to a snack of vibrantly green grass.
