Black Canyon
Black Canyon of the Gunnison is located in western Colorado. The Black Canyon was carved by the Gunnison River. The Black Canyon is so named because its steep vertical drops make it difficult for sunlight to penetrate into its depth, the bottom receiving at some places as little as 1/2 hr of direct sun light per day. As a result, the canyon walls are often covered in shadows, causing the Canyon walls to appear black.
