13th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Black Crowned Heron

These Black Crowned Heron always show up at the National Zoo each spring to have their young. The zoo feeds them on a regular schedule so the birds do not eat the food of the other zoo animals. Then by October the birds have left the zoo and go to parts unknown, although they are working on tracking the movements of these birds.
