I met Treshawn on a bitterly cold October evening outside the vacant Kmart building on Lake Street. Treshawn, a dancer, was there to record a performance for one of his courses. He was kind enough to let me watch and take his portrait afterward. Here’s what he had to say about why, despite freezing temps, he picked this site for as the backdrop for his assignment: “My theme for my project was to show the resilience of Blacks in America. I wanted to do this by shining light on Black excellence in Minnesota while highlighting the new rise of BLM surrounding the death of George Floyd. I chose to dance in front of that mural because it showed the late George Floyd’s death as well as other Black Americans’ deaths that were swept under the rug.”
