18th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Black-hearted, tattered, last leaf of fall that a car ran over.

Daily neighborhood walks offer all kinds of photography options for me. A car had just ran over this orange-red leaf. I hold it between my fingers, until the sun shines through. This intensifies coloration; magnifies imperfections that I want to see. Imperfections add interesting detail. Things and people are interesting with imperfections. I think about the life of a single leaf, the importance of it as it too adds beauty to autumn glory. Just as one person can and does. One of something or someone can be as important as many, or even most important to the good of earth.
