16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Black Spider Monkey
We were touring Lake Gatun, looking for wildlife. This is the lake that supplies the locks of the Panama Canal with water. It takes 52 million gallons for each ship that goes through the original locks! The lake, man made, filled many square miles of valleys, leaving hilltops as islands where birds and wildlife flourish.
