19th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Blue Carpet

This shot was made with the use of the snoot, a device that inserted into the flash creates an adjustable dimensional shape and size conical light . I think in macro photography, the snoot is a great resource, to avoid particularly ugly backgrounds, and to change the angle and shape of the light, making possible variants that would otherwise be impossible or very difficult to achieve with other systems and with the result to give more character and diversification to the shots that we do. This shot, for example, was made with a square hole snoot, so as to illuminate the subject: a splendid Hymenocera picta above a blue starfish it feeds on. Anilao (Philippines).
