19th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Blue stars

This shot was made with the use of the snoot, a device that inserted into the flash creates an adjustable dimensional shape and size conical light, making possible variants that would otherwise be impossible or very difficult to achieve with other systems and with the result to give more character and diversification to the shots that we do. This shot, for example, was made with a circle hole snoot, so as to illuminate the subject: a couple of splendid Hymenocera picta above a blue starfish it feeds on.
