Blue-winged Mountain Tanager Peeking out from Calliandra Flowers

When Calliandra Trees Flower... One of my favorite times of year in Ecuador's northwest Intag region is when the Calliandra trees blossom. The tree, native to this part of Western Ecuador, attracts several species of hummingbirds as well as wild and domestic bees to its swee nectar. However, I was surprised to learn that several bird species also appreciaate the flower's sweet nectar.
