Body Spikes

I captured this Indian Chameleon (Chamaeleo zeylanicus) in a way that reveals the incredible biological architecture hidden beneath its skin. I achieved this by strategically placing an LED light source directly behind the chameleon. This intense backlighting transforms the typically opaque animal into a translucent, living sculpture. The light passes through its delicate skin and tissues, dramatically illuminating the intricate network of blood vessels, which appear as bright, glowing patterns of life, almost like a branching, ruby-red river system. The rest of the chameleon's silhouette and form are strongly defined against the background. I feel this lighting technique creates an utterly out-of-this-world effect, turning a simple portrait into a complex biological study where the internal workings of the chameleon are momentarily exposed as a beautiful, glowing map.
