A view of Bombay Beach located at the Salton Sea, CA, USA. The Salton Sea is a large inland lake that sits below sea level and is on the verge of disappearing due to lack of water flowing into the basin. With the water level dropping it is leading to both an ecological and health crisis. The water, as well as the lake bed, is full of salts and other harmful chemicals due to decades of runoff from agriculture irrigation in the region. As the water evaporates more and more of the shoreline is exposed and as it dries the dust is picked up by desert winds and spread around the region causing numerous cases of respiratory illnesses for people in the area. In addition the loss of water has caused the lake to become extremely unhealthy for both bird and aquatic life due to increased salts and other chemicals in the water.
