22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Boundaries of Light

In the moment of final daylight, the sun dipped behind the eponymous dunes of Great Sand Dunes National Park. Long shadows stretched across the sand and those fleeting photons reflected in Medano Creek. I wanted a photo which highlighted how this is a place of boundaries. Water meeting sand. Sand touching sky. Day touching night. The creek also represent a boundary of time. This water which mirrors the golden light of the setting sun only flows at specific times of the year — when the warmer Spring and Summer winds melt the snow on the peaks of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The title “Boundaries of Light” emphasizes these borders. But notice everywhere you look in the landscape, finding an exact spot where one stops and the other begins is futile.
