Bridge at Antietam Creek

This peaceful scene underlies it's history as the site of the Battle of Antietam in the Civil War. On September 17, 1864, more than 22,000 men were killed, wounded or captured in the deadliest one-day battle in American history. The Sycamore tree in the left side of the photo witnessed the battle and now stands as a silent witness to both the beauty and brutality that have existed here.
