13th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Brown Pelican in the Desert, Flamingo Hotel, Las Vegas, Ca.

For those of us lucky enough to spend time on the coasts watching Brown Pelicans soar, dive , and feed, is a wondrous sight. After populations where nearly killed off before the insecticide DDT was banned in the early 1970's, these beautiful and comically graceful birds are now off the endangered list. It broke my heart to see this bird in a sanctuary in Las Vegas, way out of it's natural habitat. Unfortunately, this is the way most people will experience this wonderful bird. Hopefully their curiosity will be piqued and they will learn more about this great flyer and fisher.
