Building boats to sustain lives

This is the Alexandria Seaport Foundation boat shop. Since 1993, the foundation's Apprentice Program has worked with at-risk youth ages 17-22 to help them develop professional and life skills. The foundation has built this program on the foundation of Alexandria's rich maritime history and teaches the apprentices, among other skills, how to build the dory boat, which was the most common boat on the Potomac River in the early 1800's. Since its inception, approximately 700 young people have graduated from the foundation's Apprentice Program.
