Burquas in the Rain

Three friends in black burqas walk down Marine Drive in a pounding monsoon downpour, leaning into the wind as palm trees whip beside them. The image celebrates quiet resilience and companionship in the face of the city’s wild seasonal weather. The burqua - the black cloak like dress traditional muslim women wear, is often painted as repressive and sign of a regressive society, however, I have observed these three friends sit, chat and stroll on marine drive every saturday right through the monsoons showing camaraderie, freedom and symbolising freedom.
