Calcio Storico Fiorentino

Calcio storico fiorentino (literally “Florence’s historic football") is a primitive soccer-rugby-brawl hybrid with 27 players on each team and precious few rules. Games are played in renaissance costume between Florence’s four competing quarters: Santa Croce (Blues), Santa Maria Novella (Reds), Santo Spirito (Whites) and San Giovanni (Greens). Once a year, the final of the Calcio Storico turns this genteel city wild. This year the final was played between the reds and blues and the result was historical for Santa Maria Novella.
