23rd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Travel
Carnevale di Venezia 2025 series/8.

The 2025 Venice Carnival was organized in honor of Casanova, who was born 300 years ago. Like every year, this year too, people will parade through the streets, squares, and palaces of Venice in amazing costumes. A significant part of the costumes are homemade, as only these could participate in the competition. So the costumes and the creativity of the people are impressive. But what excites me most is who is really hiding behind the costume. That's why I make portraits and strive to make the eyes visible. They say 'The eyes are the mirror of the soul' and together with the costume or the way they move in the costume or the little performance they perform, the props - everything reveals something about the person. This is a wonderful game!
