23rd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
Caroline Church
Church of the local Setauket, NY Loyalists during the American Revolution. The church was established in 1723 and the building erected in 1729 when the church name was changed from "Christ Church" to Caroline Church in honor of Queen Karoline of England. A brief skirmish between Patriot and British soldiers was fought on the grounds nearby the church on August 22nd in 1777. The church has bullet holes in its belfry and steeple that resulted from the battle.
