16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Catalina Island Fox

The Catalina Island fox is found exclusively on Catalina. The island is home to around 2,000 of them, however, they rarely interact with humans. Most live in remote areas of the nature reserve. All tour long, our guide had been talking about the foxes, but we hadn't seen one yet. Right as we were about to leave the reserve, this little guy popped up just off the road.
