14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
Cattle Drovers in silhouette at day's end.

The end of the day, and these drovers with their horses, as tired as they are, line up to talk about the day and enjoy the setting summer sun. From a distance I watched several scenarios play out in silhouette as the sun set on a hot summer day in the Flint Hills of Kansas. The Flint Hills are the largest remaining stand of tallgrass prairie left in the world. They are preserved and protected, as they should be. But lifestyles of the past flourish here, like these drovers finishing their day of driving cattle.
