The waves thunder through the island sea caves causing a rumbling that can be heard well away from the shoreline. The local residents claim that the Ojibwe said this noise was the sound of evil spirits or "Matchimanitou" that "Kitchie-Manitouo" or The Great Spirit had imprisoned there.
