22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Cedar Waxwing in March
On berry trees outside my college dorm, waxwings (both cedar and Bohemian) flock in the fall and spring. They pick dried berries from last season off the branches, chittering in their own characteristic way. In flocks, they're bold, unlikely to fly away from a curious photographer.
