23rd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Artistic
ceiling of Winchester Cathedral
"Fingers of Man; Hands of God" While walking about Winchester Cathedral, I was struck by the contrast in lines. The top of the choir looked like human fingers reaching up in a desire to connect with God. The ceiling supports/lines, however, seemed like hands with interlaced fingers, decidedly NOT reciprocating the reaching out (the antithesis of Michelangelo's Creation of Man). It struck me as ironic that a church designed for connection between earth and Heaven, man and deity, should imply disconnection, even an indifferent God to human beseeching.
