Cemetery in Kuzomen village

Due to deforestation, combined with overgrazing and forest fires, the first anthropogenic wasteland on the Kola Peninsula, Kuzomenskie Sands, was formed, and to this day is a monument to unsustainable nature management. At the beginning of the XXI century, the authorities of the Murmansk region began to take measures to stop the spread of sands. Nevertheless the ecologists say that the spread of the Kuzomensky sands is still far from completely stopping. So the old local cemetery crosses keep drowning in the sands while wild horses take a leisurely stroll through the village.
