17th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World

A diver fins past an entrance to an extensive underwater cave system in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. Caves in the Yucatan contain speleothems that formed when ice sheets stretched half way across North American and sea levels were lower than today.
