My project "Chaos and Night" is one meant to make any audience a thoughtful one. I deconstruct the ideal of art as meaningful simply by having no real meaning in my photos here, at least none that I personally create. The photos are vague, ambiguous, and enthroned in questions the audience must answer for clarity. This was achieved through careful and subtle artistic techniques in my project. Through precise lighting, emotive faces, and an oppressively dark background, I show an image of existential meaninglessness. My viewers have no choice but to question things, to seek further clarity, and have to make answers for themselves. John Milton, in his classic Paradise Lost, describes Chaos as the "womb of nature"; my Chaos, under the frown of Night, is the womb of art. It is the duty of an artist to create, and the dream of an artist to have a thoughtful audience.
