'Charak' or Hook Swinging festival is been a popular folk culture of rural West Bengal mainly amongst agricultural community . During the last day of the month of Chaitra(April 14th or 15th ) the followers of’Lord Shiva ‘ celebrate this festival to satisfy the God to eliminate sorrow and sufferings of the coming year. During this ritual, two iron hooks embedded through the bloodless zone of the skin of male folk and is been swung, hanging at the end of a long pole with enormous speed.” This kind of vibrant folk culture should be used as a key of development of local community through the concept of ‘cultural tourism’.
