Chauu is a dance form performed by the mostly tribal population of Purulia and Midnapore, in West bengal, India, where the tales of Goddess Durga, Shiva, their family and Asura is told through dance performance accompanied by the intoxicating beats of the traditional drums. The performance mostly takes place in open air, where the audience gather to see the vibrant dance. The chauu artists dress up in bright and colourful attire commensurate with the Gods they depict and the main highlight of their costume is the elaborate face mask that they wear. The artists are all male who dress up and Goda and Goddesses. While in a recent trip to Purulia in came across a Chauu group, getting ready to with their attire.
