19/03/2025 Bukhara Uzbekistan The Markaziy Bozor in Bukhara is a renovated Soviet-era market offering a wide range of fresh products, including fruits, vegetables, dairy, and spices. Most vendors come from villages within a 50 km radius of the market, confirming that the vegetables sold are locally grown (Wanderlog). Agriculture remains a key sector of Uzbekistan’s economy, employing about 26% of the workforce and contributing around 25% of the national GDP (Trade.gov). The main agricultural products include tomatoes, onions, carrots, melons, and grapes, cultivated primarily in river valleys and oases, fertile areas supported by irrigation (Wikipedia). Compared to the past, during the Soviet period, when markets were less organized and sales more fragmented, today the Markaziy Bozor features cleaner, better-structured spaces where modern displays coexist with traditional stalls. This allows local producers to sell their goods directly while offering visitors a more orderly, comprehensive, and immersive experience, reflecting the connection between local agricultural traditions and the city’s historical evolution
