Cheetah Chase

One afternoon, we encountered Nishipa, a mother cheetah, teaching the cubs how to hunt. All five of them were resting in the shade of a tree. Slowly, we felt a change in their demeanor. She had spotted a gazelle calf at a distance. Nashipa sat up; the cubs did not move; she sprang and sprinted quite a distance to catch but not kill it. The cheetah's speed is legendary, and watching her speed over the grassland was terrific. The cubs caught up to her, and she released it. The cubs then chased the calf and honed their hunting skills. A cheetah trips its prey and then suffocates it by biting their neck. This behavior is what the cubs were practicing on the calf. Though the end is inevitable, it is a heart-wrenching experience seeing the calf crying out in confusion as the cubs are chasing it.
