16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Altered Images
Chiasognathus grantii
Beetles are extremely diverse in sizes, colours, shapes and behaviours. Darwin observed the behaviour of Chiasognathus grantii beetles collected in Patagonia on the second expedition of the Beagle. He described the role of the huge jaws of male beetles in the dispute for females.
