14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Chimpanzee through the brush

This photos was taken while trekking chimpanzees in Kibale National Park in Uganda. To protect the local wildlife from poachers and local farmers, the community in conjunction with the National Park Service have come together to develop sustainable programs to keep the chimpanzee populations alive. Not only does the trekking programs provide jobs to the local communities, but other businesses also begin to thrive with tourism dollars entering the area. From lodges, taxis, local craft vendor and food providers, a new way of working with the wild animals has fostered a sustainable ecosystem and economy based on preservation and protection.
