23rd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Artistic
Chromatic Leafscape
This close-up photograph captures the surface of a tropical leaf as its colors shift from deep greens to warm reds and golds. By eliminating the wider plant and focusing only on the layered texture, the scene becomes almost abstract. The leaf’s natural pigments form vertical gradients, and a subtle curve at the edge creates a sculptural feeling, as if the plant is shaping itself around light. Nothing here is digitally altered; the colors are the leaf’s real seasonal transition under soft afternoon light. The image explores how nature often builds patterns that look intentionally designed, even though they appear by chance.
