22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Cicada

One of Brood X periodical cicadas, that emerged in spring 2021 after 17 years as a nymph underground, sat contentedly on my thumb. They don't bite and don't hurt people, but do eat tender, young leaves on trees, bushes, and other plants. Their singing is very loud!
