16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest People
City Faces
For this photographic series pedestrians were asked for participation, placed in front of advertising boxes and photographed. In doing so the advertisements could throw a unique glow onto the pedestrians’ faces which combined with the nocturnal darkness renders them nearly unrecognisable. The subjects of the city create in the light of the advertising boxes a new form of anti-advertisement which grants the glint of the silhouette a new representation. The protagonists find protection in the shine of the box and their features are often only felt in a rudimentary way. An identification seems almost impossible but the individual streaks of shadows and details shed light on the personal facets of the individual.
